Australia's first national solar hot water manual and handbook

Domestic Solar Hot Water and Heat Pump Installation and Maintenance Handbook

First Edition - September 2009

As Australia moves to phase out greenhouse intensive electric storage hot water systems (starting in late 2010), this handbook has been produced by the Master Plumber’s and Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) for the Department of Environment Water Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA).

This important reference document has been produced as part of a national effort to provide objective information on a range of technologies and the situations in which they produce the best results. Importantly, in an effort to lift the quality of installations, the best installation techniques are also shown and explained. The overall goals are to ensure that people get safety, reliability and high performance from their solar hot water investment.

This is the first time that there has been a coordinated nationwide approach to installation documentation and the first time that evacuated tube products have been objectively compared with other methods of water heating.

Domestic Solar Hot Water and Heat Pump Installation and Maintenance Handbook

Endless Solar was honoured to be invited to be a member of the Review Committee for this publication. Endless Solar contributed detailed material so that, for the first time, Australian-invented evacuated tube products are recognised as a superior solution when compared with other water heating methods.

This full colour 103 page reference source is filled with diagrams and covers subjects as diverse as:

  • System selection
  • System sizing
  • Pipework design
  • Types of collectors
  • Collector installation considerations
  • Types of tanks
  • Stratification
  • System types
  • Boosting
  • Maintenance
  • Valves
  • Temporary hot water installations
  • New building requirements
  • Australian Standards and Guidelines

Large Scale Solar Thermal Systems Design Handbook

Solar thermal systems are being successfully applied to commercial and industrial applications such as hot water for hospitals, laundries, schools, dairies etc. Well designed solar thermal systems that use high quality components can also provide heat for industrial process heat applications, or for solar cooling purposes.

In recognition of the rapidly growing demand for commercial and industrial solar thermal applications, this handbook has been produced jointly by the Master Plumber’s and Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) and Sustainability Victoria (SV).

This unique reference work is the first time that detailed information relating to modern solar thermal designs has been included in one national handbook.

Endless Solar was a contributing member of a small Review Committee that included: Deakin University, Rheem Australia, and University of NSW.

Large Scale Solar Thermal Systems Design Handbook

This handbook provides guidance in designing best practice, large-scale solar thermal systems, and addresses common design issues, including flow rates, hydraulic configuration, control designs and collector arrangement.

There are 3 detailed case studies included: two from Spain, plus an Australian example contributed by Endless Solar that details the design considerations and results from a commercial scale solar thermal installation in NSW.

This full colour 127 page reference source is filled with diagrams and calculation methodologies and covers subjects as diverse as:

  • Collector performance comparison
  • System layouts
  • Collector loop design concepts
  • Energy conservation
  • Control systems
  • Temperature ranges
  • Solar fraction
  • Design tools (including TRNSYS, RETscreen and SolSimNZ)
  • Project feasibility and management
  • Installation and commissioning checklist
  • Solar radiation data sources for Australia
  • Australian Standards and Guidelines
  • References and further reading
